Introduction to Sea Kayaking
B-Active offers a number of courses for people to learn and develop the basic sea kayaking skills. From our superb base in Rhoscolyn, we have a range of options for sea kayakers at all levels to find challenge and reward. Our Introductory courses aim to get people started on their exploration.
Introductory Courses are run by an experienced local coach and designed for people with a little kayaking experience who would like to gain skills and experience to enable them to paddle independently.
These courses are ideal if you have a little kayaking experience and would really like to get out and explore the local coastline whilst learning the basic skills of sea kayaking. The course will utilise local venues to provide you with an introduction to the fun and adventure to be had exploring the Anglesey coast by sea. With so many isolated coves, islands and sea caves there is always plenty to see and explore. You will be supported in doing this by an experienced local coach helping you to learn the skills and acting as your guide.
The course is delivered flexibly depending on the conditions and group but will focus on developing boat-handling skills whilst exploring the local coast, two-day courses usually include a full day journey on the second day. All equipment is provided. Cost £55 per day or £100 for two days booked together.
See relevant course page in the booking section for dates and to register.
Sea Kayak Skills days – leading towards the BCU Three Star Award
The BCU Three Star Sea Kayak Award is for intermediate paddlers who have already developed the fundamental kayak skills on flat water and now wish to apply them to more challenging environments. The sea kayak award takes all the basic skills developed at two-star level and applies them to the coastal environment. In addition paddlers will need to show an understanding of trip planning on the sea, demonstrate appropriate rescues and towing techniques, demonstrate key off-balance strokes on the move and be able to roll.
A paddler who achieves the three star award can consider themselves to be a competent member of a group paddling in sheltered or moderate water on the sea.
Three star skills days will be tailored to suit the particular needs of the participants, elements of the syllabus will be worked on to assist participants in moving towards the award and individual guidance will be offered as to areas for further development prior to assessment.
Assessments can be arranged for participants who reach the required standard.
All equipment provided. Cost £55.
See relevant course page for current course dates and to register.
“Accompanied” paddling sessions
This Spring we are offering mid-week “Accompanied” paddling sessions. They are aimed at people who have had a taste of kayaking, maybe even have their own boat, but are not yet ready to venture out on their own. These afternoon paddles will utilise a variety of venues around the Anglesey coast with venues being chosen based on the conditions on the day.
Sessions will be led by an experienced local coach and will provide an informal way for people to gain experience and confidence. Why not come along and meet some new paddling buddies.
